College Success Coach
Responsibilities:
- Recruiting and working with a target population of college students to support and enhance their success in college. The target population are those students considered underserved as a result of meeting one or more of three criteria: race/ethnicity, Pell status, and first generation and who have completed 14 or fewer college credits.
- Assisting students in the target population in developing individualized academic plans, applying for financial aid and scholarships, identifying academic needs and linking to tutoring or other learning support resources, visiting student development course (SDV) classes and providing follow up when risk factors such as poor attendance or low grades are evident.
- Communicating with students in the target population on a regular basis and engage them in person individually and/or in small groups.
- Communicating with college faculty and coordinate with student services personnel regarding students in the target population to ensure that they have access to college resources and support that will lead to completion of their academic program.
- Capturing appropriate data on student communications, interactions and success strategies in order to strengthen the college’s use of college success coaches.
- In addition to providing support and resources for students in the College Success Coach program, this position will also be responsible for retention, outreach and recruitment activities with some evening and week-end work required.
- Representing the College at events, visits to community sites to talk with prospective students and identifying students interested in the College and the CSC program.
- Coordinating campus visits.
- Coordinating the flow of communication between VHCC and prospective students, including but not limited to, follow-up with prospective students who have initiated a VHCC and/or a FAFSA application.
- Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with students, faculty & staff and other stakeholders important to the college.
Qualifications:
- Baccalaureate degree (grant requirement) is required.
- Experience working with students in higher education required; with community college experience preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of the needs of at-risk students and commitment to the mission of a community college are required.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule to represent the college including some evenings and weekends required.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty & staff and other stakeholders important to the college required.
- Excellent communication skills and demonstrated professionalism required.
- Experience in higher education recruitment highly preferred.
- Work experience in counseling or academic/career coaching and working with at-risk student populations are preferred.
