Job Description
Virginia Highlands Community College serves our community by providing quality and affordable education, training, and cultural activities through an array of flexible, diverse programs that enable community members to succeed today and in the future.
The faculty, staff, and stakeholders of Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) enjoy the privilege of serving the citizens of the commonwealth who reside in Washington County, western Smyth County, and the city of Bristol, VA. One of 23 institutions in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), VHCC is a beacon for educational opportunities, in view of Mt. Rogers and Whitetop Mountain at Exit 14 on Interstate 81 in Abingdon, VA. With a robust 54-year heritage, VHCC serves students in the service region through a Workforce Development Division, a Professional and Technical Studies Division, an Arts and Sciences Division, and a Nursing Division. VHCC awards credentials and continuing education courses as well as Associate of Applied Science degrees, Associate of Arts and Sciences degrees, certificates, and career studies certificates.
Instrumental to the overall culture of the college and the surrounding community is a long-standing tradition that places great value on the arts. At the college’s founding, visionary leaders at VHCC established institutional and academic priorities that have kept the college positioned to serve students who are passionate about musical, theatrical, and visual arts, including the Keyser-Aday Theater on campus. VHCC students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders thrive in the heart of a culture that celebrates artistic endeavors illustrated by the following examples: Barter Theatre (the State Theatre of Virginia), the William King Regional Arts Museum, the Virginia Highlands Festival, the Southwest Virginia Cultural Center and Marketplace, and the Arts Depot in Abingdon, VA; the Lincoln Theatre and the Wayne C. Henderson School of Appalachian Arts in Marion, VA; and, the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, the Rhythm and Roots Festival, and the Paramount Center for the Arts in Bristol, VA.
In light of these distinctive qualities, VHCC is seeking a full-time faculty member who will teach art history and/or art appreciation courses in addition to representing the interests of the college and the students before numerous artistic communities in our service region. Intentionally, VHCC seeks to employee a full-time faculty member who will bring a diverse set of experiences and perspective to this service for students. This colleague will teach courses in art history/appreciation courses in a combination of seated and virtual delivery methods each semester, and the remaining workload credit hours will be dedicated to supporting the VHCC Arts Array initiative and conducting various liaison activities in the best interest of maintaining, promoting, and expanding the endeavors of the college within the regional arts communities.
