On-site working hours Between Monday – Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm.
37.5 hours per week.

Job Summary

The Kentucky Geological Survey is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated individual to work on a two-year grant funded project. The project's goals include organization and cataloging of the publications and documents at the Earth Analysis Research Library in a facility off-campus. The position is eligible for healthcare benefits.

What you'll do:
  • Catalog research documents, including publications, theses and maps
  • Perform condition assessments and item repair if necessary
  • Identify and match physical samples to existing resources and assign unique identifiers
  • Learning established KGS naming conventions for files and other resources
  • Develop a storage plan for a specific, climate-controlled space
  • Use established criteria for deaccessioning and scanning needs
  • Recording metadata and description of physical and digital representations of items
  • Work closely with KGS staff to ensure data conformity and collection management systems

  • You have an interest in geology or earth sciences
  • You care about findability and preservation of research data
  • Your written and verbal communication skills are clear (including handwriting)
  • You enjoy working on a small team
  • You are skilled at organizing things by topic, type, and/or identifying relationships between items/collections
  • You have (or desire) training with archival preservation techniques and library systems
  • You have reliable transportation to access the facility on a daily basis
Where you'll work:

EARL is a rock, mineral and soil analysis and storage facility located off UK's campus. Your primary place of work is inside the Records Room at EARL, adjacent to the storage facility.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Attention to detail, organizational skills, excellent communication and interpersonal relationship skills, teamwork, must have legible handwriting

Preferred Education/Experience

Experience with data management, Excel or similar spreadsheet tools; entering item-level metadata; experience organizing and cataloging collections of physical items; interest in preservation and archival storage a plus.
