The Town of Ashland, Virginia (pop. 7,700), is seeking a responsible professional to coordinate community engagement and public information activities. The successful applicant will develop strategies and methods to enhance and encourage community engagement through cooperative relationships with the general public and Town staff. Work involves the production of press releases, speeches, advertisements, editorials, media kits, brochures, public service announcements, articles, flyers, award submissions, proclamations, and other informational documents. Coordinates formal and informal Town engagement activities, including community meetings and neighborhood events. Supports the Town's Tourism Department, including marketing and visitor experience efforts, assisting the Ashland-Hanover Visitor Center, and coordination with local businesses and business support organizations. Assists with public information training for elected officials, appointed officials, and employees. Strong knowledge of verbal and written communications, copywriting, and graphics skills, as well as knowledge of video production are desired. Bottom line, the successful candidate will develop and maintain strong bonds between the organization and the community by becoming the organization's Chief Storyteller.

He/she will be adaptable to changing needs, build partnerships and collaboration across agencies and organizations that have similar objectives, while seeking to enhance the Town's ability to meet community needs. They must be able to show patience, humility, and a sense of humor while dealing with coworkers and community members. May be required to be on-call and to work non-standard hours including occasional weekends.
The position requires graduation from an accredited college or university with a major in Business or Public Administration, Marketing, Tourism, Communication, Journalism, or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred, but not required. Three to five years of relevant experience is required. Applicants who do not meet the education requirements, but with significantly more experience may be considered. Starting salary range for the position is $57,859 to $70,000 DOQ/DOE.
