Narrative Writer
The Kansas City Star is hiring an in-depth, narrative reporter who uses the tools of literature and investigative reporting to write magazine-style stories that will appear across all our platforms. We’re looking for a journalist who can toggle between the deeply-reported pieces that help set the agenda in Kansas City and quick-turn narratives during big breaking news events.
Expertise in a particular subject area is not required, but the successful candidate will have a clear understanding of what’s important to local readers, preferably earned by working as a takeout, investigative or beat reporter at a local news outlet. This journalist will bring a multi-platform mindset to each assignment, delivering must-read stories that help connect our print readers to our dynamic eEdition, apps and website. Experience on a rewrite desk is also a plus.
Education: College degree preferred.
Experience: At least 5 years of reporting experience, preferably on local issues.
Skills needed:
-
A fresh writing style, with an engaging, sharp and conversational voice.
-
Ability to build source networks and bring a constant flow of story ideas.
-
Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories.
-
Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving.
