Code Enforcement Inspector - Smyth County

Smyth County is currently seeking applications for the position of Code Enforcement Inspector.

Under the direct supervision of the Building Official, the Code Enforcement Inspector conducts plan reviews and building inspections and does related work as required. Ensures that buildings constructed, renovated, or otherwise altered are done so in compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and other safety codes. Provides advice, assistance, and direction to the public concerning appropriate building requirements. Difficult problems are resolved by the reference to pertinent manuals and codes. Position requires extensive time spent out of the office in various weather conditions.

Prefer education equivalent to graduation from a two-year college with concentration in building construction and engineering. A combination of acceptable education with at least three (3) years experience in major building trades in responsible position or as a skilled worker, plus at least three (3) years experience in general building construction may substitute. Must be eligible for state certification or receive certification within eighteen (18) months of date of employment. Must maintain certifications through continuing education by attending seminars and related training. Applicant must possess a valid Virginia driver's license.

Knowledge of approved codes relating to building construction, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. Knowledge of good engineering practices in design and construction of buildings; and the basic principles of fire prevention. Must have the ability to read and interpret complicated construction plans and blueprints. Ability to advise clients/citizens of legal requirements for construction and establish effective working relationships with local contractors, fellow employees, supervisors, and the public. Must be able to work in an independent environment, and communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Knowledge of proper business English, spelling and arithmetic.

Salary Range: DOQ with full County benefits.
