Vice President of Culture and People
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Vice President of Culture & People is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing all employee experience and organizational cultural initiatives for the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS), in collaboration with the Indiana State Personnel Department (ISPD). The VP of Culture & People participates in establishing and implementing major goals and objectives for the ISMHS and serves as a resource in all aspects of human resources. This person provides valuable insight in establishing and implementing overall human resource objectives, policies, and plans for ISMHS.
ISMHS is a statewide museum system with 12 locations including the Indiana State Museum in downtown Indianapolis and 11 historic sites in the Indiana communities of Corydon, Evansville, Fountain City, Geneva, Madison, Metamora, Nashville, New Albany, New Harmony, Rome City and Vincennes. As a quasi-state agency, ISMHS partners with ISPD on payroll and benefits, as well as other initiatives as appropriate.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as a support to the ISMHS Leadership Team (President & CEO, Chief Curator and Research Officer, Chief Development Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Officer of Engagement and Chief Operating Officer) for HR-related issues and opportunities.
- Develops and designs human resources policies and programs; directs management and implementation of programs that support employee productivity and drive organizational results.
- Leads cultural building initiatives, always serving as an ambassador for the organization to all audiences, and ensuring that diversity, equity, and inclusion are integrated into ISMHS initiatives.
- Assesses and supports the business regarding organizational structure, talent strategies, attraction, and retention strategies.
- Consults with management and affected staff to quickly resolve personnel issues.
- Creates a compensation strategy for all employees based on market research.
- Provides ongoing training in the areas of performance coaching, employee relations, compliance, Employee Handbook guidelines, DEIA initiatives and key policies regarding EEO and harassment-free workplace.
- Develops training materials and performance management programs to ensure employee understanding of job responsibilities as well as ISMHS policies and procedures.
- Partners with ISMHS Leadership Team to align HR strategy and organizational strategy.
- Identifies goals to support talent including hiring plans, reward and recognition, development planning, and performance management planning.
- Leads with a strong ethical and social conscience driven by a knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, as well as non-profit/public sector employment policies and procedures.
- Willingness to perform other duties as assigned.
SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Capability and comfort with prioritizing multiple projects, deliverables, and timelines to exercise thoughtful judgment, problem-solving and decision-making.
- Ability to think ahead and identify opportunities for change and improvement with an emphasis on operations and efficiency.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite and ZOOM, Microsoft Teams, or other virtual meeting/remote work platforms.
- Experience with HR tools and recruiting software, as well as job boards and posting platforms.
- Knowledge of a broad range of human resource strategies and practices, including compensation, performance management, safety, hiring and employee relations: able to apply these strategies and practices in compliance with employment regulations.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Ten to twelve years' experience in human resources.
- Five to seven years' experience in a HR leadership position.
- A Bachelor's degree in human resources, labor relations, organizational development, business, and related area: relevant work experience may be a substitute.
- SPRH or SHRM-SCP certification strongly preferred.
- Experience with the human resources information systems, analyzing data to guide strategic employment planning, labor legislation, compensation & benefits, recruitment, training & development.
- Knowledge of employee survey best practices and experience with making data-driven HR recommendations.
- Strong understanding of the interviewing process, onboarding, benefits, and other HR functions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- The physical demands described here are representative of those an individual must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time while working on a personal computer or riding/driving/flying due to travel.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
- The person in this position needs to frequently move about within our large museum space, administrative offices, and around our 11 Indiana State Historic Sites.
